Topics and Speakers

Inclined lifts
Alex Carmichael, Bureau Veritas
The prEN81-22 European standard specifies the safety rules for lifts that are inclined at maximum angle of between 15 degrees and 75 degrees in relation to the vertical and which have various types of drive systems. This standard has been many years in the drafting and may soon be published. The speaker will discuss the many aspects of developing this standard and will highlight some of the problem areas encountered during its drafting.

Falls from or over the side of escalators
David Cooper, LECS(UK)
It is often stated that the number of falls over or from the sides of escalators are increasing. The author has undertaken research into this claim and has analysed accidents located over a period of some 20 years. This paper includes the identification of the number of incidents occurring, the trends and the common types of accidents.

Experiences with the remote alarm protocol BS-DD265
M. Goddard, ETL and R.Patel, Windcrest
DD265 (Draft for Development) specifies requirements for a signalling protocol for communications between a lift alarm system and a rescue service using dual-tone multi frequency (DTMF) signals to either an automatic or manually based alarm receiving station via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) system. The speakers will relate how the implementation of DD265 is working in practice.

The real energy efficiency of lifts
N. Mellor and M.Thompson, Pickering Lifts
Where ever you look today companies are keen to make visible their green credentials by publicising what they are doing to reduce the impact on the environment. Just so with lifts, but is it true ? This paper looks at some ideas to improve lift energy efficiency and some possible implications of future higher energy prices.

The great escape – evacuation lifts
Derek Smith, LEIA
The UK has had BS5588-8 “Code of practice for means of escape for disabled people” since 1988. This is now being incorporated into a new proposed British Standard prBS9999 “Code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings”, which will bring together nearly all of the BS5588 family of standards into one place. Meanwhile Europe has published prTR81-76 “Evacuation of disabled persons using lifts”. Confused ? Mr Smith may help.

A small number of table top displays will be exhibited during the Seminar.
Admission to the Annual Seminar will be by ticket and there will be a registration fee of £30 for attendance.

To register send you name, address and fax to: CIBSE Lift Group, PO Box 7, Sedbergh, LA10 5GE.  Enclose a cheque for £30 (payable to Gina Barney Associates).
