Should LOLER be changed? – A debate!
Room E1, Renold Building, Sackville Street, Manchester University, M60 1QD.
Tuesday 11 May 2010
Council Chamber, CIBSE, 222 Balham High Road, London, SW12 9BS
Friday 11 June 2010
Both meetings commence at 17.00 (tea/coffee 16.30)
The Health and Safety Executive is considering proposals to improve the process by which the thorough examination of lifts under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) are reported. This is in response to concerns raised by some local authorities. The HSE would like to avoid changes to the LOLER regulations itself and would prefer to establish a consensus between the duty holders, lift inspectors and local authorities.
Alex Carmichael of Bureau Veritas and David Cooper of LECS(UK) will propose some ideas for debate.
The meeting will be chaired by Dr Gina Barney and audience participation is essential. For more details visit: www.bit.ly/loler-lifts

British Council for Offices (BCO) 2009 Guide To Specification
Adam Scott, Roger Preston Dynamics
For a number of years the British Council for Offices has published a comprehensive guide to best practice in the specification of offices. Previous editions have provided limited guidance on good lift design. The new guide offers advice on a much broader scope of vertical transportation issues. The speaker sat on the technical committee which wrote the vertical transportation section and will discuss the key aspects, explain some of the reasoning and how they compare with CIBSE Guide D: 2010.
SAFed Guidelines for the Safe Operation of Escalators and Moving Walks
R.Hulmes, Safety Assessment Federation
These Guidelines have been prepared by the SAFed in consultation with the Health and Safety Executive, and other interested parties within the escalator and moving walk industry. They support the legislation and replace the HSE Plant and Machinery guidance notes PM34: “Safety in the use of escalators”, and PM45: “Escalators: periodic thorough examination”. The guidelines cover the selection and design considerations, safe operation, maintenance, management, thorough examination and supplementary testing of all escalators and moving walks in service, irrespective of age or location.
